Female Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery

Childbirth, injury, and aging can weaken or damage the supportive tissues around the uterus, bladder, vagina, cervix, urethra, and rectum, resulting in pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and other pelvic disorders.

Pelvic organ prolapse happens when the tissues that support the pelvic organs stretch and weaken to the point that the organs shift from their normal position, causing pain in their pelvic area. Women with pelvic prolapse may also have bowel and bladder problems and discomfort during sexual intercourse.

Uterine prolapse occurs when the tissues supporting the uterus relax or weaken so much that the uterus drops (prolapses) onto the vagina. Sometimes the drop is so great that women have bleeding and vaginal drainage, in addition to pain.

Other symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse include:

  • Feeling like you’re sitting on a ball
  • Pulling in the pelvis
  • Painful intercourse
  • Bladder infections
  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Unusual discharge
  • Constipation
  • Frequent urination
  • Protrusion of tissue from the vagina

With da Vinci robotic surgery, a minimally invasive procedure known as female pelvic reconstructive surgery can be performed to provide women the relief they need to function.

Known as a sacrocolpopexy, this procedure is considered the most effective way to correct pelvic prolapse and resolve symptoms. During the operation, surgical mesh is used to hold your affected pelvic organ(s) in their natural position. The mesh remains in place permanently.
